If you’re looking for a spot in Boston that feels a little unexpected, a little romantic, and genuinely fun to shoot in, LoPresti Park in East Boston might be exactly what you’ve been looking for. As a Boston engagement photographer, I’ve had the chance to shoot at a lot of parks around the city, and LoPresti keeps making its way onto my list of favorites for engagement sessions.
It’s not the most talked-about location, and honestly, that’s part of what makes it great.
Why LoPresti Park Is Perfect for Engagement Photos
LoPresti sits right along the East Boston waterfront, looking directly across the Inner Harbor toward downtown Boston and the North End. The skyline views are unreal. You get that classic Boston backdrop without the crowds you’d deal with at the Esplanade or Christopher Columbus Park.
The park has a relaxed, neighborhood feel. It’s where locals walk their dogs and grab a bench in the evening. That energy makes couples feel way more comfortable than a formal garden setting ever would.
A few things that make it work so well for photos:
- The waterfront path offers open sky and clean backgrounds with the city behind you
- There’s a mix of open green space and tree coverage depending on the time of day or season
- Golden hour here is spectacular, with the light coming across the water and bouncing off the downtown buildings
- It’s spacious without feeling overwhelming, so you’re not constantly dodging tourists
If you’re still exploring your options, I have a full breakdown of the best engagement session locations in Boston that’s worth checking out before you finalize anything.

What to Expect During Your East Boston Engagement Session
Most sessions at LoPresti run about 60 minutes. That gives us enough time to work through a few different spots in the park without rushing.
We’ll typically start near the main waterfront path with the skyline in the background, then work our way through the park depending on where the light is. If you come during golden hour, we’ll spend a good chunk of time right along the water’s edge catching that warm end-of-day glow.
The vibe I always aim for is relaxed and natural. I’ll give you a little direction here and there, but mostly we’re just walking around, talking, and letting real moments happen. The best engagement photos don’t look posed because they aren’t.
What to Wear
The park has a pretty neutral backdrop, which is good news because just about anything looks great. A few loose guidelines:
- Avoid all-white or very light outfits near the water since the bright reflection can throw off exposure
- Earth tones, deep blues, and warm neutrals photograph beautifully against the skyline
- Dress for the weather but bring a light layer since the waterfront can be breezy even on warm days
Best Time of Day
Late afternoon leading into golden hour is the sweet spot. The light gets soft and warm, the downtown buildings start to glow, and the whole scene just comes together. Aim to start about 90 minutes before sunset.
Morning sessions work too if you prefer cooler temperatures and softer, flatter light. The park is quiet in the mornings, which some couples really like.
When to Go: Seasonal Breakdown
LoPresti looks different depending on the time of year, and each season has its own appeal.
Spring and fall are the most popular choices. The weather is comfortable, the light is beautiful, and the colors in the surrounding East Boston neighborhood add texture to the shots. Fall especially, with the leaves changing a short walk away, is a great combination with the waterfront backdrop.
Summer sessions need a little more planning around the heat and haze. Golden hour in summer starts later, so expect a later session time. The payoff is those long, warm evenings with the city lit up across the water.
Winter is underrated. The bare trees and muted tones feel artistic, and if you get a clear day, the skyline pops against a bright blue sky. Just bundle up.
Getting to East Boston and Parking
LoPresti Park is easy to reach, and you’ve got a couple of options.
If you’re coming by T, the Blue Line runs right into East Boston. The Maverick Station stop is about a 10-minute walk to the park. If you’re driving, there’s street parking along Sumner Street and the surrounding neighborhood streets, though spots can fill up on busy evenings.
You can find more location details and directions on the City of Boston Parks Department website.
Do You Need a Permit for Engagement Photos at LoPresti Park?
For personal use sessions, including engagement and anniversary photos, most Boston city parks don’t require a formal permit. LoPresti Park falls under the City of Boston’s Parks and Recreation Department, and as of the time of writing, casual photography sessions for personal use don’t require advance permitting.
How Far in Advance Should I Book an Engagement Session?
This one comes up a lot. My general recommendation is to book at least 4 to 6 weeks in advance, and further out if you have a specific date or season in mind. Golden hour sessions in fall and spring fill up quickly because everyone wants that light. If your engagement session is tied to a wedding timeline, a good rule of thumb is to book it 3 to 6 months before your wedding date so there’s time to get the photos back and use them however you’d like.
What Should We Do During an Engagement Session?
The honest answer is: just show up and be yourselves. I’ll handle the rest. We’ll walk, talk, maybe grab a spot by the water and just hang out for a bit. The moments that look best are usually the ones between the posed shots, when you’re laughing about something or one of you says something that makes the other smile. I’m watching for those moments the whole time. If you’re nervous about the camera, that’s completely normal, and most people are fully comfortable within the first 15 to 20 minutes.
Can We Bring Our Dog to LoPresti Park?
Yes, and honestly, please do. LoPresti is a dog-friendly park and it’s one of the spots in East Boston where you’ll regularly see people walking their dogs along the waterfront path. Having your dog in the session adds a lot of personality and gives couples something to focus on other than the camera. Just keep a leash handy since the park does require dogs to be leashed, and maybe tire them out a little before the session so they’re a bit more cooperative.
For couples thinking through all the logistics of planning your engagement session alongside the bigger picture of your wedding, I put together a Boston wedding guide with planning resources and real wedding inspiration that covers a lot of the questions I hear most often.
