Engagement LocationsEngagement Session FAQs
An engagement session is a photo shoot I do with you before your wedding day. It’s usually an hour or two at a location that feels meaningful to you as a couple. The photos are great for save the dates and wedding websites, but honestly the bigger benefit is getting comfortable in front of my camera before your wedding day arrives.
I recommend booking your session at least six months before your wedding. That gives you plenty of time to use the photos for save the dates and keeps things relaxed. I’ve had couples try to squeeze one in a few weeks before the wedding and while it works, you lose the benefit of having those photos when you actually need them.
I always encourage couples to pick a spot that holds special meaning to them, like where you met, got engaged, or just love spending time. If nothing comes to mind, tell me the vibe you’re drawn to and I can suggest locations I know photograph well. The more personal the location feels, the more natural the photos tend to look.
Wear something you feel confident and comfortable in, not something you’d never normally put on. I always suggest bringing two outfits so we get some variety in your gallery. Outfits that coordinate without being too matchy tend to look best, and I’d steer clear of busy patterns and large logos since they pull attention away from your faces.
Most of my sessions run 60 to 90 minutes. That’s usually enough time to work through two outfits, move between locations if they’re nearby, and give you time to settle in and relax. The first few minutes of any shoot may feel a little awkward, even for the most comfortable couples, so having that extra time really does show up in the final photos.
I deliver between 50 and 100 fully edited photos from a typical session.
I always recommend golden hour, which is the hour before sunset. The light is warm, soft, and genuinely flattering in a way that’s hard to replicate at other times of day. Midday sun is harsh and creates unflattering shadows, so if you have any flexibility with your schedule, late afternoon is almost always the right call.
Absolutely, and I love when couples do. Just plan for a little extra time since pets add some unpredictability to the session. I’d also suggest bringing a friend or family member along to hold your dog during the moments we want just the two of you. As long as your dog is comfortable around new people and outdoor settings, it usually makes for some of my favorite shots.
