Lesbian Engagement Session at Arnold Arboretum & Brookline Booksmith

Gretchenrea and Molly were the kind of couple who made my job easy. Their energy was so natural together, so genuinely happy, that I barely had to direct them at all. As an LGBTQ wedding and engagement photographer, I’ve photographed a lot of couples, and some sessions just have a different feel. This was one of them. We split the day between the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain and the Brookline Booksmith. Autumn foliage, leaf piles, cozy bookshelves, and a lot of laughing. That was the vibe.

Arnold Arboretum Session in the Fall

We started at the Arboretum on a classic New England fall day. The leaves were absolutely doing their thing. Deep reds, burnt oranges, and that golden afternoon light that makes every shot look effortless. Gretchenrea wore a plaid flannel that was perfectly autumn, and Molly was in a denim jacket and white dress. They looked great together, and the landscape basically gift-wrapped the backdrops for us.

The two of them lying in a pile of leaves, laughing with zero self-consciousness, is one of my favorite frames from the whole year. Then there were quieter moments, foreheads together by a massive old tree, a kiss tucked between the branches. If you’re considering arnold arboretum engagement photos for your own session, this gallery is the case study you didn’t know you needed.

Part of what made this work so well was how fully themselves they were. As a gay engagement photographer, that’s something I really care about. Gretchenrea and Molly held hands on the paths, kissed by the trees, and didn’t shrink for anyone. When a couple feels safe and seen, you get real moments, not posed ones. That’s everything.

Brookline Booksmith Engagement Photos

After the Arboretum, we headed to the Brookline Booksmith for the second half of their Brookline engagement session. The energy shifted completely, and it was perfect.

The Booksmith has warm interior light, colorful book spines everywhere, and a relaxed, lived-in feel that’s ideal for couples who are a little camera-shy at first. Gretchenrea and Molly wandered the aisles, flipped through books, sipped their to-go cups, and leaned into each other between the shelves. One of my favorite shots from the day is the two of them facing each other in a long aisle, the shelves stretching behind them. Simple and gorgeous.

For same-sex engagement photos or anyone wanting something more personal than a park, the Booksmith is genuinely one of the more underrated spots in Boston. Check out the best engagement session locations in Boston if you’re still deciding on your own backdrop.

Why a Two-Location Engagement Session Works

Gretchenrea and Molly’s day is a great example of what split-location sessions can do. The trick is picking two spots with different energy. Outdoor and indoor. Expansive and intimate. The Arboretum gave us wide open fall landscapes with dramatic color. The Booksmith gave us warmth, texture, and a close-up feel. Together, they tell a fuller story of who this couple is, and the variety in the final gallery is so much richer for it.
