Boston Spring Engagement Session at Arnold Arboretum

Beth and Matt are the kind of couple who don’t need a lot of direction. They showed up relaxed, ready to have fun, and pretty much just started being themselves in front of the camera. As a Boston engagement photographer, sessions like this one are genuinely some of my favorites to look back on.

We spent a late summer evening wandering the Arnold Arboretum, and while the location is beautiful, it honestly could have been anywhere. The reason this gallery works is because of them.

And make sure to check out Beth and Matt’s gorgeous Lyman Estate wedding, which is one of the most beautiful historic mansion wedding venues in MA.

What Made Beth & Matt’s Session So Easy to Shoot

Matt had Beth laughing within about five minutes of us starting. Not a polite, camera-aware smile. Actually laughing. From that point forward, my job was basically to keep up.

That energy carries through every photo. You can see it in the wide shots where they’re completely lost in each other, and in the close-ups where she’s clearly trying not to crack up at something he just said. That stuff is impossible to manufacture, and it’s what separates a good gallery from a great one.

Two Outfits for the Engagement session

Beth brought two looks, and it was one of the best decisions she could have made. The teal dress photos have this bright, summery feel — lots of color, open spaces, lots of movement. The cream sweater and jeans look they switched into later in the session is softer and more intimate, especially in those golden hour shots as the light dropped low through the trees.

A few things Beth and Matt did really well with their outfit choices:

Kept it comfortable

Both looks felt natural on them, not like they were dressed for a performance.

Used color intentionally

The teal popped against all that green without competing with it.

Brought layers

The sweater added warmth to the late-session photos in a way a summer dress couldn’t have.

Dressed for each other

They looked like themselves on a nice night out, not like they were trying to look like engagement photos.
