Overcast days don’t get enough credit. No harsh shadows, no squinting, just this soft, even light that makes everything feel a little more intimate. That’s exactly what we had for Lisa and Alex’s engagement session at Walden Pond in Concord, MA, and it suited them perfectly. These two aren’t the look-at-the-camera-and-smile type. They’re the laugh-until-you-forget-you’re-being-photographed type. As a queer engagement and wedding photographer, those are my favorite people to work with.

When Lisa and Alex reached out, they knew exactly what they wanted. Somewhere meaningful. Somewhere that felt like them. Walden Pond in Concord, MA checked every box: historic, peaceful, and with enough variety in scenery to keep things interesting.
And it really does have variety. In one afternoon we moved from the sandy shoreline to old stone steps, through the woods, and out onto the railroad tracks nearby. Each spot had its own feel, and Lisa and Alex brought something different out in each one.

We kicked things off by the water. The day was overcast, which honestly is one of my favorite conditions to shoot in. Soft, even light. No squinting. Lisa wore this stunning blue dress that popped against the muted grays and greens of the pond behind them.
The first few minutes of any session are always a little warm-up. People laugh a little nervously, aren’t sure where to put their hands. But these two settled in fast. By the time we were a few frames in, they were totally themselves.
When They Forgot the Camera Was There
Here’s the thing about Lisa and Alex: they’re playful. Like genuinely, naturally playful with each other. There’s a shot of them on the beach where Alex is doing something ridiculous and Lisa is cracking up, arms out, mid-laugh. That’s the real them. And those are always my favorite frames from any session.
You can’t fake that kind of ease with someone. It has to already be there.
The Quiet, Intimate Moments
As we moved deeper into the park toward the old stone steps, the energy shifted a little. It got quieter. More intimate. Lisa leaned into Alex and they just stayed there for a second. No prompting needed. Those are the moments I live for as a photographer.
The Railroad Tracks Near Walden Pond
The railroad tracks were a highlight. There’s a stretch near Walden Pond that’s just stunning, especially in early spring when everything is just starting to green up. Lisa spread her arms wide in one shot, blue dress against the disappearing lines of the tracks. It’s bold. It’s joyful. It’s very her.
And then there’s the shot of the two of them facing each other on the tracks, completely absorbed in each other, like the world outside that frame doesn’t exist. That one is going to look incredible on a wall.
