There’s a specific kind of ease that comes through in photos when two people are really, truly happy together. You can’t fake it and you can’t direct it. Cassie and Heather had it in every single frame. This Carson Beach session was one of those evenings I keep coming back to, and if you’re an LGBTQ couple looking for an inclusive and gay-friendly photographer, I think you’ll see why.
Why LGBTQ Couples Love Carson Beach for Engagement Photos
Carson Beach sits in one of the most welcoming corners of Boston. South Boston has a strong, visible LGBTQ community and that energy is felt at the beach too. Nobody blinks. Nobody stares. You can hold hands, kiss, laugh loudly, and just be yourselves without a second thought, which honestly makes a huge difference when you’re trying to be present during a photo session. Beyond the vibe, the location itself gives you a lot to work with. Open sand, a waterfront boardwalk, the pavilion, the city skyline in the distance. You’re not stuck in one spot trying to make one background work for 60 minutes. And when golden hour hits over the harbor, the light is the kind that makes every shot look intentional. For LGBTQ couples who want photos that feel real and relaxed, it’s hard to find a better combination.

Switching to Cozy, Casual Outfits
Partway through the session, Cassie and Heather changed into more casual outfits, trading the black dresses for jeans and soft, cozy tops. That simple shift instantly changed the mood from “date night out” to “favorite Sunday afternoon together,” which is exactly what an engagement session should feel like.
In their casual looks, they curled up together in the grass, wrapped their arms around each other, and settled into poses that felt natural and authentic, without me directing or getting in the way of their natural interactions. The photos from this part of the evening feel intimate and relaxed, like a quiet love story told just as the day was ending.

Tips for Planning a Carson Beach Engagement Session
Timing is everything
Late afternoon on a weekday is the sweet spot. The beach thins out, the light gets good around 5 or 6 depending on the season, and you’ve got more freedom to roam without navigating around crowds.
Wear something you feel good in
Cassie wore a black dress. Heather kept it casual with jeans and a light top. They complemented each other without being too matchy. That balance works really well in photos.
Leave time to explore
Some of my favorite shots from this session happened after we’d already “finished.” We wandered toward the pavilion area and found this great light coming through the structure. Don’t rush out the moment the main spots are covered.
If you want to explore even more options in the city, I’ve put together a full guide to the best engagement session locations in Boston that’s worth a look before you decide on a spot.
How Long Does an Engagement Session at Carson Beach Take?
Most sessions run about 60 minutes. That’s enough time to move through a few different spots and get a good variety of photos without anyone getting tired or feeling like it’s dragging.
Is Carson Beach Good for LGBTQ Engagement Photos?
Absolutely. It’s a welcoming, public space in a very queer-friendly neighborhood. South Boston has changed a lot over the years, and Carson Beach specifically tends to draw a pretty diverse crowd. I’ve never had any issues shooting there.
What Should We Wear to an Engagement Session?
Wear something you’d actually put on for a nice casual date. Avoid super busy patterns or neon colors. Neutrals, soft tones, and classic pieces tend to photograph really well, especially near the water where the light can be unpredictable.
Can We Do a Sunset Engagement Session Year-Round?
Yes, with some caveats. Spring through fall is ideal. Summer evenings are beautiful but the beach can be busy. Fall is honestly my favorite, the light gets softer and the crowds thin out significantly. Winter sessions are possible but you’ve got to be up for it.
