Frank and Mark came to us the way a lot of couples do, a little nervous, a little excited, and mostly just ready to have fun. As a Boston queer engagement and wedding photographer, I’ve had the privilege of working with so many incredible couples, but there’s something about an engagement session at Castle Island that just hits different. The salt air, the open views of the harbor, the old stone fort in the background. It’s one of those spots that feels both laid-back and a little epic at the same time.

Why Castle Island Works So Well for Engagement Photos
Castle Island in South Boston isn’t just a pretty backdrop. It’s a place where people actually hang out. Dogs, joggers, families eating fried clams from Sullivan’s. That energy makes it easier to relax and just be yourselves, which honestly is the whole goal of an engagement session.
Frank and Mark were naturals from the start. By the time we made our way around the fort, they’d already forgotten about the camera. That’s when the good stuff happens.
Starting at Castle Island
We kicked things off right at the fort, and the stone walls gave us so much to work with right away. The textures, the big open sky behind them, the harbor in the distance. It’s a dramatic setting without feeling stuffy.
Frank wore a straw hat that day, which honestly added so much personality to the photos. Mark kept stealing it. There’s a sequence of shots near the fort wall where they’re both laughing and it’s impossible to pick just one.
We worked with the light as it shifted, moving from open shade near the walls to a spot where the late afternoon sun came through just right. That golden glow on their faces in a few of those frames is everything.
One of my favorites from this stretch is a quieter one. Just the two of them close together against the stone, genuinely happy, not performing anything. There’s a black and white version of a frame from that part of the session that I keep coming back to.

Moving Down to Carson Beach
Once we wrapped the fort, we made our way down to Carson Beach and the whole vibe shifted. The tall grass, the open water, the sky stretching out wide. It felt more relaxed, more wandering.
There’s a stretch along the water where Frank and Mark walked out into the shallows at one point, just the two of them, laughing about something. I stayed back and let it unfold. Those are the frames I love most.
One of my favorites from Carson Beach is a shot of the two of them sitting together on the grass, Mark’s arm around Frank, both of them cracking up. You can feel the comfort between them. It’s not posed. It’s just them.
If you’re considering the South Boston waterfront area for your own session, this post about Carson Beach engagement photos walks through everything you’d want to know, from timing to what to wear.

The Moments That Made This Session
Some sessions are about the location. This one was about Frank and Mark.
They’re the kind of couple who finishes each other’s sentences and teases each other constantly. At one point Mark started doing an impression of something and Frank completely lost it. I kept shooting. That’s the stuff that makes a gallery feel alive.
We also did a few quieter moments near the end, a little slower, a little more still. Just two people, close together, genuinely happy.
What to Wear for a Castle Island Engagement Session
Frank and Mark nailed the outfits. Both in blues and whites, coordinated without being matchy-matchy. The tones worked beautifully against the water, the stone walls, and the greenery.
A few tips for what works at this location:
- Lighter, neutral tones photograph really well against the harbor and stone backdrop
- Layers add visual interest, especially if the wind picks up
- Comfortable shoes matter, you’ll be walking on pavement, gravel, and grass
- Avoid really busy patterns, they can distract from your faces
Is Castle Island a Good Location for LGBTQ Couples?
Absolutely. South Boston has changed a lot over the years and Castle Island draws a diverse, welcoming crowd. We’ve never had an uncomfortable moment shooting there with LGBTQ couples, and Frank and Mark felt completely at ease the whole time.

What’s the Best Time of Day for Castle Island Engagement Photos?
Late afternoon, about an hour and a half before sunset, is the sweet spot. The light gets warm and directional, the crowds thin out a little, and everything just looks better. Midday light can be pretty harsh out there with all the open space and water reflection.
How Long Does a Castle Island Engagement Session Take?
Most sessions run about 90 minutes to two hours. That gives you enough time to hit a few different spots, let the nerves settle at the beginning, and still get a good variety of images. We covered Castle Island and Carson Beach in one session with Frank and Mark and it felt relaxed the whole way through.
Do I Need a Permit to Shoot at Castle Island?
For personal use engagement sessions, you typically don’t need a permit at Castle Island. It’s a public state park. That said, things can change, so it’s always worth checking with the MDC or your photographer before your session date.
Can We Bring Our Dog to a Castle Island Engagement Session?
Yes, and please do. Dogs are allowed at Castle Island on leash and they make sessions so much more fun. Just know that they’ll probably be the star of every photo they’re in, which, honestly, is fine.
What Should We Do Before Our Engagement Session?
Show up as yourselves. That’s the honest answer. Spend the morning doing something you enjoy together. Get coffee. Walk around. Don’t stress about posing because we’ll handle all of that. The best engagement session locations in Boston all have one thing in common: they work best when you’re relaxed enough to enjoy them.
